You could spend days hiking the network of beautiful trails covering Réunion Island, visiting rainforests, volcanoes and waterfalls while camping out or staying with local villagers in mountain gîtes (small cabins). Many people do multi-day or even week-long hikes through the cirques, but sadly, as we were challenged for time, our only option was a day hike down into Mafate.
It is a high place for hiking since it is only accessible by foot or by helicopter. No road is traced in this cirque, which makes it even more authentic and unique! It therefore makes the hikers happy and reveals an impressive mineral and vegetal environment.
First of all, a cirque is a natural enclosure with steep walls, circular or semi-circular in shape, formed by a depression of glacial origin. Cirque of Mafate offers a dream setting and a paradise for hiking in Reunion. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage site and accessible only on foot, it is the wildest cirque on the island.
This accommodation has an ideal location for hiking in the cirque of Mafate (Col des Boeufs only 9 km away). The 2 assets of this accommodation: the panoramic view (see photo below) and the welcome of the owner.
The islands calderas are the result of huge landslides and erosion which formed cirques in an ace of spades formation around Piton des Neiges (highest peak on the island) and are divided by steep ravines. All three cirques offer different activities and landscapes. Mafate with its jagged contours, Salazie with its impressive waterfalls and Cilaos with its peaceful walks. The ONF (French National Forestry Commission) links all these forests together with over 700 km of footpaths offering trails for simple walks to extreme hiking all waiting to be discovered
If canyoning or climbing are too strenuous, hiking and trekking are excellent ways to see this cirque. You'll find plenty of groomed hiking and mountain biking trails for energetic guests, ranging from easy to difficult, all offering wonderful photo opportunities. Visitors will travel up and down hills, past magnificent waterfalls, and perhaps stop at the village of Cilaos, where they can visit a vineyard or two to sample the excellent local wines, indicative of the fine French traditions of wine-making. The area is also known for its production of lentils - a grain that is plentifully used in delicious local dishes - and its beautiful embroidery work.
Cirque de Mafate is a cirque in Réunion National Park, the western of the three craters on the extinct volcano Piton des Neiges on the volcanic island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean . Due to the lack of an access road, the Cirque de Mafate is only accessible on foot and from the air and is highly attractive hiking terrain in a wild, rugged volcanic landscape with a tropical-exotic natural area. As part of the "inner zone" of the Réunion National Park, which was founded in 2007, the valley basin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hikers, get your brogues out ! Reunion Island offers an exceptional playground for mountain lovers: a mountainous landscape (Piton des Neiges culminates at 3069 m altitude), authentic cirques free from civilization, a spectacular volcano, fascinating primary forests ... Everybody will find something to their taste and level: from the half-hour family walks (the famous "sentiers marmailles") to the "Grand Raid" which each year gets a few hundreds of runners rush through the island (8000 m difference in height!), everyone can find their way up! The National Forest Office has indeed marked more than 1,000 km of trails, not to mention the two big hiking trails ("GR1 and GR2") that crisscross the mountains of Reunion.
* Clothing : Don't forget a fleece jacket (the temperature is bordering on 0 C in winter), a windproof raincoat or cape, and, of course, good light and studded walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and a bottle of drinking water. * Timing : Reunion Island is for those who get up early, and it is even more true for hiking! Indeed, mid-morning usually brings the fog, and early hours will allow you to enjoy the first rays of sun on the walls of the cirques.
