X-Men: The Official Game (also known as X3: The Official Game) is the name of Activision's three tie-in video games to the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand. Players control the actions of several X-Men-related characters, most notably Logan, Nightcrawler and Iceman, as they uncover a plot to eradicate mutants. Sometimes, another X-Man will help the player's character battle. The Nintendo DS game features Magneto as a playable character, while the Game Boy Advance version features Colossus as a playable character. Many agree[who?] that Logan is the only useful character in the Game Boy Advance game, which allows players to cycle through characters at will, as he is the only one who can recover from damage.[citation needed]
Back at Xavier's mansion, Nightcrawler tells Xavier he does not want to be an X-Man, for their lives are too violent and he is a peaceful man. Xavier tells him he is always welcome in the Mansion, and Kurt leaves [N 3]. Meanwhile, Cyclops goes to Jean Grey's house and sees her, apparently still alive, with her power spiraling out of control, resulting in her shutting the door on him. The game ends with Cyclops begging to be let inside[N 4].
Zak Penn and Chris Claremont co-wrote the story for the game. Penn is the co-writer of X-Men: The Last Stand, and Claremont was a longtime writer of the X-Men comic books, establishing the personas for many of the "new" X-Men team, which featured then new members Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Banshee, and Wolverine. Claremont is best known for the Dark Phoenix Saga.
On the consoles and PC, some of the problems cited were repetitive gameplay, poor enemy AI[29] and the fact that the Xbox 360 version looked similar to the other console versions despite the better hardware.[15] Detroit Free Press gave the Xbox 360 version three stars out of four and said, "I'd be happier if Cyclops were at my fingertips, too. But all in all, the variety these three X-Men provide is adequate for one little video game".[38] The Times gave the game a mixed review and stated that "nice graphics and smooth gameplay are no substitute for imagination".[39] However, The A.V. Club gave it a D and stated that "almost everything about this movie cash-in is cheap and incompetent, from the short, forgettable levels to the poor control system to the hand-crampingly repetitive action".[37]

When you select a mission, the game will show you how many more mutation upgrades you will receive upon completion depending on the difficulty you play it on. Most of the missions have to be done on 'Superhero' difficulty to receive all mutation upgrades, but some may be done on 'Hero'. The older generation of X-Men games is also interesting for how early the series seems to have embraced Wolverine as one of its strongest and most popular characters. It only took four entries for Wolverine to get a standalone game, and no other character from throughout the series ever has since. Of course, Wolverine has managed to maintain his popularity over the years as he is also the only X-Men character to get his own movies as well as a rumored Wolverine series coming to Disney+.
Once X-Men started approaching more modern times, video games based on the characters began to slow down. The series even completely skipped the last console generation with no standalone X-Men games being released for the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. However, the most notable game released in this generation of the series' games is undoubtedly X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which tied in with the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine showed Wolverine from an entirely new perspective for video games. With a Mature rating, the game was gory, with parts of Wolverine being shot off from damage while he tore through enemies like they were nothing. The game was a much darker and mature approach to an X-Men game, and it attracted a lot of new players to it for that very reason. It also allowed the game to stand out from other games from the series, which started to play it much safer around the time of X-Men Origins: Wolverine's release. With how long it has been since the series got a proper new video game release, however, many fans are wondering what shape the next X-Men game may take.
The X-Men have also popped up in plenty of crossover titles over the years, but their appearances have also slowed down in recent years. X-Men's biggest impact on these games is in fighting games such as Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which feature multiple of the mutants as playable characters. Interestingly, the X-Men were completely absent from the newest release Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
Many fans have speculated that the series' slumber has been a consequence of Fox owning rights to X-Men films while Disney nearly owns the rest of Marvel. However, now that the mutants have returned to Marvel with Disney's purchase of Fox, many fans have begun wondering how the X-Men will be integrated with the MCU. Hopefully, Disney's ownership of the property will see them returning to the games industry in a meaningful way again for all X-Men fans.
